Adding fields to your document
After you upload a PDF, you land in the document editor, where you place the fields your recipients will fill in and sign.
Field types
Choose a field type from the Field Selection panel before clicking on the document. Each type has its own color so you can spot it at a glance:
Swipe across to compare all plans
| Field | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Signature | A full signature |
| Initials | Initials, for shorter acknowledgments |
| Date | Automatically stamped with the date the recipient interacts with it |
| Name | Free-text name entry |
| Free-text email entry | |
| Address | Free-text address entry |
| Title | Free-text job title / role entry |
| Checkbox | A simple checked / unchecked box, useful for "I agree" style acknowledgments |
You can also add your own field type — click Add Custom Field, give it a label (e.g., "Department" or "Favorite Color"), and it behaves just like the other text fields.
Placing, moving, resizing, and deleting fields
- Click a field type to select it.
- Click anywhere on the document to drop the field there. A faint preview follows your cursor before you click, so you can line it up first.
- Move a field by clicking and dragging it.
- Resize a field by dragging the small handle at its bottom-right corner.
- Delete a field by hovering over it and clicking the trash icon that appears.
Heads up: Deleting a field cannot be undone with Ctrl/Cmd+Z — moves and resizes can be undone, but a deleted field is gone for good. If you deleted the wrong one, just place a new one.
Required vs. optional fields
Fields are required by default, shown with a small red asterisk. To make a field optional, hover over it, click the gear icon, and choose Optional. Recipients can't submit the document until every required field is filled in.
Assigning a field to a recipient
If you haven't added a recipient yet, placing your first field will prompt you to add one. Once you have recipients, click a recipient's name in the Recipients panel to select them — every field you place afterward is assigned to that person. See Adding and managing recipients for the full picture, including sending the same document to more than one signer.
Tip: Ctrl/Cmd+Z undoes your last move, resize, or field placement — handy if you misplace something (just remember it won't bring back a deleted field).
